Product Description
On the run after killing a cop, small-time crook Jesse Lujack (Richard Gere) teams up with Monica (Valerie Kaprisky), a French architectural student he encounters in Las Vegas. Tempting Monica with the offer of a trip to Mexico, Jesse takes her along for the ride, but it isn't long before his criminal activities catch up with them both. Jim McBride directs this remake of Jean-Luc Godard's 'A Bout de Souffle'.
Amazon.co.uk Review
Breathless, Jim McBride's 1983 remake of Au Bout de Souffle rewrites Godard's existential hipster as a vain, style-obsessed hood and in the process loses some of the point. Godard's hero was a translation and productive misunderstanding of a quintessentially American sort of delinquent; because it is a retranslation, Gere's intelligent, nervy performance as Jesse Lujack suffers by comparison, however admirable it is taken in itself. McBride's direction strokes Gere's face and body lovingly--his every foxy smile, or glance at himself in a mirror, is played for passionate significance. This is also a good-looking film: the back alleys of LA and sunset over the Mojave desert have rarely looked as good. Valerie Kaprisky's Monica is inevitably given secondary importance; the decision to make the woman who goes along with Jesse's wild final ride on a whim an exchange student makes her at once more and less like her equivalent in the Godard--she has a touching exoticism that is at the same time somehow beside the point. The DVD includes the original theatrical trailer. --Roz Kaveney

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 August 2019Love this film. It is Richard Gere at his best. Young and handsome. I used to have the film on video and loved it back in the 80's. Good story of a loveable bad boy obsessed with a pretty college girl. Valerie Kaprisky was well chosen to play opposite Richard Gere.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 July 2019I remember watching this DVD in the eighties and it is just as good now as it was then.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2024Richard Gere as Jesse, a petty thief, spends much of his time evading the law. The best part is the strong sexual magnetism between Gere and Valerie Kaprisky which gives the film some quality.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 April 2012In my case this is the film that brought Richard Gere to my attention, better by far than the older french version.
A must see film, and one for your collection if you are a Gere fan.
Purchased at Amazon.co.uk. always a five star service.

5.0 out of 5 stars cult movie
I rated this a five star because it is a cult movie. Richard Gere is in his height of the bad boy period, Valerie Kapriski at the start of her career (that didn't last too long), and both have good chemistry and natural play during the movie. It is also nice to see Los Angeles (UCLA) and other cities in the eighties and compare to the present. The movie renders those years of economic difficulties, cigarettes, early days of epidemics like AIDS. The style is very eighties, the relationship between characters, the mood, the hopelessness behind the scenes, the fate. The behavior of law enforcement is also very characteristic of the era. Cult movies are great to discover a period of time long gone.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Right Remake of the Original
I ordered this movie for both my parents. I watched this for the first time in 2020. I was entertained. Not bad for the 1980s.

3.0 out of 5 stars Version américaine du film de Godard

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathless is " one of my all time favorite comedy movies
Breathless is " one of my all time favorite comedy movies . Richard Gere " is so fantastic " as the " drifter, loser, con-man " - " Jessie ". Gere is ' my personal favorite male movie actor -- and I feel that in this movie ' Gere gaves his best movie performace ". The movie is ' witty, funny , and " just plain enjoyable to watch ". The movie soundtrack is " absolutely senstional "-- sensational 80's music ! I would recommend this fine film to ' Any and All " because Breathless is a ' Simply Sensational movie " !!
