Product Description
Stanley Kubrick's first film for seven years details the dehumanizing effect of military combat, as experienced by a bunch of Vietnam conscripts under the training of the sadistic Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey). The second half of the film follows one of the recruits, Joker (Matthew Modine), onto the battlefield as he is thrown into the war at the height of the Tet offensive. The entire movie was shot on location in East London.
Amazon.co.uk Review
One of a series of revisionist Vietnam cinema released in the late 1980s, Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket is essentially split into two stories linked by a number of characters. The film follows new recruit Joker (Matthew Modine) and his fellow soldiers through their basic training and into combat in Vietnam. The first half is a chilling portrayal of military brutality and de-humanisation, mainly at the hands of Sgt Hartman (played at a level of staggering intensity by ex-Marine Lee Ermey), that centres around the tragic character of Private Pyle, a young man pushed to the edge of his endurance. The tone of the film is no less harsh when transported to the combat zone as we see the results of the training process in action: the young men turned into unquestioning killing machines. Joker is perhaps the one exception, a soldier with "Born to Kill" written on his helmet who also sports a peace sign on his lapel. But the film finds itself caught in the trap of many of the war movies of the time--how to create audience empathy with characters who are essentially in the wrong. It's a dilemma that Full Metal Jacket never really solves, although as a spectacle the film is a masterpiece. Made in the days before CGI became the norm, the battle sequences--filmed, rather bizarrely, in London's Docklands before its redevelopment--are hugely realistic and are perhaps the key moments of the movie, heightening the disorientation and fear felt by the soldiers. By offering no more than a snapshot of the Vietnam conflict (the action deals with one individual skirmish), Kubrick cleverly leaves any judgement on the war to the audience, although clearly attempting to influence them. The fate of the characters who survive is also left in the balance, but we can perhaps imagine what awaits them.
On the DVD: Part of a series of Kubrick DVD reissues, Full Metal Jacket has been treated to the full remastering and restoration treatment. The battle sequences have benefited the most, gaining a new audio and visual crispness and clarity that adds to their already impressive sense of realism--you can almost feel the heat searing from the screen and the explosions detonating around you. Maybe not the best war film ever made, as some may claim, but certainly one to take you right to the heart of the action. --Phil Udell

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 September 2022All four of the great Vietnam films: Apocalypse Now; The Deer Hunter; Platoon; and this one, have a different perspective on the hell that was Vietnam. Kubrick sets the tone for his with the title, Full Metal Jacket. Not a person, a group of people, or the nature of the war, but a characteristic of the bullets used in a Marine's rifle.
It's a story about dehumanisation: In the first half the deliberate and ruthlessly applied process of training; reducing the men from individuals to one soldier amongst many with a single purpose: to kill. As their Drill Sergeant tells them (para), 'One marine may die, the marines go on forever'. They are made into killer ants in a colony. The impact of this on one sensitive mind, crushed into conformity and then beyond, is the 1st key point in the film. Kubrick dwells on this in a way which gives the outcome real horrific power. And they haven't even got to Vietnam yet.
In Nam, they display a certain amount of camaraderie because of this shared 'Marine Identity' but they are as ready to be cruel to each other as tolerant, and there's little real affection between them. Only loss on the battlefield raises any real emotion, and that's as much about hate, outrage, and revenge, as it is about a fellow soldier. Brutalisation joins the dehumanisation. A soldier picking off civilians, including women and children in the paddy fields is the 2nd key illustrative moment of this further loss of humanity.
There's almost no theatrically set-up tension or 'excitement' in the film. It's in many ways ice-cold in its objectivity, and the war is seen as having become 'just daily life': no moral questioning, no reflexions on the war or why it's even happening. The lead character 'Joker' (and others) are bored being behind the lines, and want to go to the front and kill. Joker wants to be the first person on his street at home to have a confirmed kill under his belt. He is elated at his first experience of killing (at a distance), but his first up close and 'conscious' experience forms the 3rd key moment in the film, illustrating what the training and combat has done to him and his fellow marines by this time. Again, Kubrick dwells on this scene with great intensity.
The 4th and final key moment is Joker's final reflection on this all: totally deadpan - no thoughts, moral reflections ,or even emotions about the war itself; no mention of fellow marines (alive or dead) he has known; no interest in the slaughter of thousands and the destruction of a country; just glad he himself is still alive. So detached self-interest has now joined dehumanisation and the ready acceptance of brutality being normality
it's a very strong film, but I only give 4 stars because the very nature and power of the approach and comment Kubrick is making, and how he renders it painfully banal, means, for me, that it's hard to care for or relate to anyone in the story.
