Product Description
On the day of his retirement, Detective Jerry Black (Jack Nicholson) makes a solemn promise to the mother of a murder victim that he will find the person responsible. Jerry begins investigating and soon ties the murder to a number of other unsolved killings in the area; however, his former boss refuses to re-open the case, so he has to go it alone. The detective then buys a broken-down gas station near the site of the killings, befriends a waitress and her young daughter, and waits and watches, hoping that he can discover the killer before he strikes again.
Amazon.co.uk Review
The Pledge is the latest offering from Sean Penn, and as in Crossing Guard he chooses Jack Nicholson as his leading man. Nicholson is detective Jerry Black, a respected and well-liked veteran of the Reno police force retiring to a life of angling with more than a little apprehension. Thus he jumps into a murder case, the slaying of a little girl, a mere six hours from retirement and makes a promise to the grieving mother to catch the killer. As his partner (an effectively abrasive Aaron Eckhart) squeezes a confession out of the severely mentally handicapped suspect (a thoroughly unsettling performance by Benicio Del Toro), Jerry is convinced that they've got the wrong man. As with Sean Penn's previous work, this is an actors' piece. Nicholson plays Jerry as having a restlessness under his easy-going, smiling calm and Del Toro, Helen Mirren, Vanessa Redgrave and Mickey Rourke make striking impressions in their single-scene appearances. Penn is less concerned with the mystery than the emotional turmoil and Jerry's state of mind, interrupting moments of calm with jagged cuts and discomforting images (including some especially disturbing crime scene photos). Jerry's instincts and methods are sound and his sensitivity is real--he takes in a battered single mom (Robin Wright Penn) and her little girl, and develops a rewarding family life--but his passion for justice turns to unhealthy, destructive obsession. That's ultimately what we're left with at the conclusion of this often off-putting but ultimately fascinating film. The truth will not always set you free.--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 January 2008...I'll say it again-To me, this is the first time, Jack Nicholson did more than just entertain.
About Schmidt, to me, was in a similar league and when he flew over the cuckoo's nest, I felt pretty much the same, but this time I feel there is even more depth to his character.
I was quite surprised when I saw this film for the first time.
The photography is rather well, and I would say the same about the casting and direction.
The soundtrack music is just right in that it underpins he conflict ,undergone by the main protagonist.
Whilst I recommend this film to anyone who'll listen to me, I also point them towards the german original "Es geschah am hellichten Tag ( 1958)".
I n this remake however, the ending was realized as intended by the author whereas the german version's ending was reputedly changed to make it a little more paletable.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 August 2019This is a really excellent film with some very apt and atmospheric music.
Jack Nicholson gives an outstanding performance as Jerry Black, a retired Nevada police detective who has given a pledge to a mother, that he will find the killer of her little girl.
This is one of these films that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
An unpredictable ending but the killer gets his just desserts and will not kill again.
Great entertainment and the third film that was directed by Sean Penn.
Sean Penn's fourth film was ' Into The Wild ' - another terrific film.
Very Highly Recommended film.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 September 2021On the day of his retirement, Reno homicide cop Jack Nicholson investigates the brutal small-town murder of an eight-year-old girl and promises the distraught mother that he will find the killer. Seen fleeing the scene, retarded Indian Benicio Del Toro is apprehended the next day and confesses under duress before killing himself in custody. It doesn’t sit right with Nicholson, who delves into similar crimes unsolved in Nevada. Finding a link with two other cases, Nicholson baits a trap for a killer who might still be out there waiting to prey on young victims. Friedrich Durrenmatt’s story It Happened in Broad Daylight has been filmed before as The Cold Light of Day, a 1995 Dutch film starring Richard E. Grant and set anonymously in eastern Europe. Sean Penn places his version precisely in the harsh landscape of the American West, the small town’s clapboard buildings puny and inadequate in the shadow of the snow-peaked Sierras. Durrenmatt’s schematic crime drama thus becomes more metaphysical character study than psycho-thriller, and in Nicholson’s admirably restrained performance the obsessive detective is a noble melancholy loner, fascinating and deeply flawed. Good intentions, it seems, are sometimes not enough and Nicholson’s sad character loses the plot. Penn calls his version The Pledge, but it could as well have been called The Secret. Nicholson unwisely keeps his counsel and it has devastating consequences for him as well as the mother, daughter and suspect. The only ones he tells the truth are his former colleagues on the force, and they don’t believe him. The casting throughout is canny: Penn not only makes shrewdly judged use of the saturnine Del Toro’s feral features but also puts Tom Noonan in a pivotal role. The softly spoken, apparently benign Noonan, of course, carries the imprint of his creepy depiction of Tooth Fairy serial-killer Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter, Michael Mann’s masterful version of the Thomas Harris novel, Red Dragon. In tone and bleak visual grandeur, Penn’s picture resembles Paul Schrader’s unforgiving film Affliction, and – as Nicholson rails in the wind against the random injustice of it all – it leaves a similarly haunting impression.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 October 2011This is another excellent performance of Jack Nicholson as the retired homicide detective solving his last criminal case. Helen Mirren is the grieving nmother acting as expected in her usual high standard and Vanessa Redgrave as the grandmother needs little introduction. The cast alone promisses a quality movie. On top of that the story is based on a play by the highly acclaimed Swiss playwrite Durenmatt whose masterpiece is The Visit.
The film takes us to the spectacular, snow covered mountains of Mexico and has an unexpected ending which leaves the case unresolwed, but two mature people find love. Very compulsive and rewarding viewing.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 April 2012Slow burner at first as Jack is about to be pensioned off his cop job,he's persuaded to stay around to help in a horrible murder case which he really doesn't have to get involved in but because he knows the victim (s) he makes a pledge to help find the killer(s).
The plot twists and turns with Robin Wright Penn starring as a down on her luck waitress, can't recommend this movie highly enough if you like intelligent movies and Jack fans will love it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 September 2014A ridiculously starry ensemble cast (everyone's in this Sean, the actor, Penn's second, or third, directorial effort, after The Indian Runner, which featured a full frontal from Viggo Mortensen, and The Crossing Guard, also starring Jack Nicholson) surrounds a riveting, if harrowing, serial, of sorts, killer thriller. It's more drama than thriller with some first rate performances. Low on gore this is a slow burning experience which delivers, in spades, atmosphere to spare. It's all about Jack, mostly and does he ever serve up a smorgasbord of delights. The cover says 15 and the other certificate, on the disc itself, says 18. I'm thinking this is for all the implied nastiness as there's very little in the way of onscreen bloodshed, aside from a rather dramatic suicide. There's some mystery here too. It's a sad film. It has no real redemption for anyone. In the end it's entirely watchable if ever so slightly forgettable. Epic cast tho.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 March 2011I think this film is wonderfully acted by Jack Nicholson and should have been shown for a longer period but it came out at the same time as a Harry Potter film and so was pushed aside. It is a very good story and i felt so sorry for him at the end of the film

Filmrezension zu "The Pledge"
Das Filmdrama "Das Versprechen" (Originaltitel "The Pledge")
Laut
JMK (Jugendmedienkommission) ist "The Pledge" ab 14 Jahren frei-
gegeben.
beinahe Rentner.Seine Leidenschaft ist das Angeln.Der Kommissar
ist Raucher und ledig.Kinder hat er nicht.
Toby Jay Wadenah, gespielt von Benicio Del Toro, spielt in "The
Tatort.Die kleine Ginny Larson ist ermordet worden.Jerry Black in-
geweckte Tochter Chrissy kennen.
ihm einzuziehen.
In "The Pledge" werden zeitliche Verhältnisse gut eingebaut,da
Meiner
Hauptfigur bewusst, was in Jerrys Kopf vorgeht.Szenen,in welchen
Meiner Meinung nach ist "The Pledge" also absolut sehenswert.
