Product Description
Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Kenneth Williams "The Hound Of The Baskervilles" as you've never seen it before. Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson) give us their unique interpretation of the Conan Doyle classic, supported by an all-star cast of British comedy greats. What is the curse that hangs over the Baskerville family? What is the terrible beast that roams the moor? Exhausted by his most recent case, Holmes sends Watson to Baskerville Hall to solve the mystery on his own while he takes a well deserved rest in London's nightspots. Watson, on his first solo case, investigates the strange goings on at Baskerville Hall and begins to suspect everyone he questioins, including himself, until frustrated at every step, he has to call for the great detective to help him out. Their discovery at Grympen Mire of the real Hound of the Baskervilles is too horrible to tell. Special Features Star Biographies Trailer
Amazon.co.uk Review
It could have been a stroke of genius reuniting Peter Cooke and Dudley Moore in a send-up of The Hound of the Baskervilles. In the event, director Paul Morrissey goes for Carry On-style humour: plenty of coarse word-play and camp innuendo, but little wit or subtlety. Cooke is a rather androgynous Sherlock Holmes, while Moore inexplicably attempts a Welsh accent to portray Dr Watson (his cameo as Holmes' mother is far less contrived). The support cast is a compendium of British comedy acting of the period--all now departed, and clearly relishing the one-liners and musical-hall farce. There are excellent contributions from Max Wall, Joan Greenwood (priceless in the seduction scene), and--in one of his last major screen appearances--Terry Thomas, as well as a winning "madame" from Penelope Keith. Don't expect even a free adaptation of Conan Doyle's novel, just let the humour take its enjoyably silly course.
On the DVD: The Hound of the Baskervilles film reproduces very decently in the 4:3 aspect ratio, with stereo sound that's not too artificial in effect. Special features consist of nine biographical overviews, the re-release trailer, and a six-minute interview with director Morrissey. Die-hard fans of "Pete and Dud" will most welcome the inclusion of the original theatrical feature, playing for almost 80 minutes and featuring extra footage of Moore's wonderfully inept piano playing. --Richard Whitehouse

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 March 2011Quality nonsense, contemporary 1970s references and surreal flights of inspired fancy and fantasy. A complete hoot. This probably one of the maddest films ever made. I had no idea what to expect. Numerous cast members had commented over the years that they'd enjoyed working on it, though the professional experience of the performer does not alway translate into an equally enjoyable experience for the viewer. In this case it did for me. Days after watching it, memorable scenes are still popping into my head, causing untoward solo-tittering in inappropriate situations. A veritable who's who of British comedy drama from the mid 20th century pass before your eyes. If you spot the odd over the top performance, that'll be one of the more restrained offerings. Thank you Pete 'n' Dud.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 May 2015We've been looking for this for ages, as it particularly tickles my wife's sense of humour. It's a bit silly, but funny nonetheless. The quality of the recordings is a bit iffy - both the edit version and the original screenplay have jumps in them, so you need to keep the remore handy to skip to the next frame. But worth persevering, and a good nostalgic trip.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 November 2021Peter Cook and Dudley Moore sadly barking up the wrong tree with this mainly unfunny spoof. There are a few good laughs but not enough. Too much of it is just too silly and unfunny (eg the water in the hotel room).
The DVD package from Prism Leisure is bizarre - there is a totally unwatchable cropped version which looks like it was made for the old style 4:3 televisions, and therefore only shows about half of the picture, and a full widescreen original version, but this too looks like it was intended for 4:3 televisions, so unless your tv has some zoom function on it the picture will be too small to see.
Overall very disappointing.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2018I remember this so when I saw it I bought it. The humour will not suit a lot of people but if you liked Peter Cook and Dudley Moore you will enjoy this
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 August 2015Haven't actually got around to watching this yet but the cast is enough to entice you in, as if having Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in the film wasn't enough Spike Milligan, Terry Thomas and so many more.Great Value would recommend this seller.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 April 2022Very funny indeed.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 April 2014Anyone who enjoyed the slightly off the wall humour of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore will love this movie Arthur Conen Doyle it certainly isn't , but anarchic and crazy it certainly is. One legged Bow Street Runners are exactly historical accurate but maybe they should be ! I loved it

3.0 out of 5 stars Hound of the Baskerville DVD
This film hasn’t aged well unfortunately, I remember watching it back in the 1980’s and thought it very funny, but today the gloss has worn off. There are still funny moments in the film and some very, very accomplished actors in this film. I don’t regret buying it but it’s more for me, the memories of the first viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!!!
I haven't seen this movie in YEARS! I have been looking for it for years!!! I am so excited to finally be able to add it to my collection. I am not a big Cooke and Moore fan, but I think this movie is hysterical. My sister and I have been quoting it forever. The adorable peeing Chihuahuas ("He just wants to be your friend, he just wants to sit in your pocket and be your friend"), the "complementary grope", the "Did you drag yourself on deck?" "Oh no, I just dressed casual" and of course "Pesticide! Pesticide...my own son committed pesticide!" "Patricide Mother!" "Oh, so you admit it then?" I CANNOT wait to get my copy! I sent one to my sister in N.J. as well, so we can both enjoy it together!

4.0 out of 5 stars Problems with regions
I bought this DVD and it was delivered promptly and I have no problems with the service delivery aspectd. However I live in New Zealand and the region for the DVD is North America so I can't play it on my DVD player. I can play it on my laptop but the reason I bought the DVD was to play it on our DVD player. I guess it's my own fault for overlooking the regional restrictions on DVDs but it is irritating.
Do I blame Amazon? I suppose not since I should have figured this out myself but anyone else (who don't purchase stuff on the internet very frequently) should consider this before buying DVDs from North America if you don't live there. My main reason for buying is that it's very difficult to get this video any more and I had a nostalgic wish to see Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in what I think is a very funny takeoff on Sherlock Holmes (incidently I also love reading the original Conan Doyle books).
So I am not complaining - just a bit frustrated- that's all
