Product Description
It's Christmas time in Royston Vasey, the little northern town whose proud motto is 'You'll Never Leave', and this special full-length episode has a darkly Dickensian yuletide flavour. We are presented with a complex tableau of stories delivered to Royston Vasey's vicar Bernice by a variety of strangers who visit her church. In flashback we are shown the terrible secret behind Dr Chinnery's always fatal attempts at veteninary surgery. Back in the present, and taking a sideswipe at Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut', the endlessly warring couple Stella and Charlie try to resolve their dysfunction, and Stella visits a strange masked group called 'Solutions' in the hope of using voodoo to get rid of her husband. Finally we travel back to visit a younger Herr Lipp, the vicious pederast, who is captured here leading a choir of small boys in the small German town of Duisberg; but what will he do to the young lad who asks if he may come to visit this Christmas?
Amazon.co.uk Review
A Gothic-comedy masterpiece, The League of Gentlemen Christmas Special is a horrific anthology of three related stories, all set in Royston Vasey, which takes its inspiration as much from the writings of MR James and Edgar Allan Poe as the low-budget Hammer and Amicus shockers that the team parody so affectionately. The stories are all linked by the Dickensian device of Reverend Bernice receiving unexpected guests on Christmas Eve: the first concerns troubled married couple Charlie and Stella becoming unwittingly involved in voodoo and witchcraft; the second features the horrendous Herr Lipp in a Nosferatu skit that reveals the terrible truth about what really goes on in Duisburg; while the third, and best, tells of the horrible hereditary curse that afflicted Dr Chinnery's great-grandfather. This one-off special distils all the League's penchant for disturbing, twisted characterisation and macabre humour into a single hour; the result is one of the most daring "comedies" ever seen on British TV.
On the DVD: The League of Gentlemen Christmas Special on disc contains the hour-long main feature accompanied by a diverse and entertaining array of extras. There's another illuminating group commentary; a 20-minute documentary "Tales from Behind the Crypt", in which we get to see excerpts from the team's first ensemble effort, "Highgate House of Horror"; a chat with composer Jody Talbot; and the League themselves "In Conversation" with Paul Jackson in the complete Radio 4 broadcast. A selection of out-takes, extended scenes, character biographies and a photo gallery are all worthwhile, but best of all is a Jackanory special with Mark Gatiss as the Victorian Dr Chinnery telling the Gothic tale of "The Curse of the Karrit Poor", a spot-on Arthur Conan Doyle spoof. --Mark Walker

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2002The four members of the League of Gentlemen have rarely failed to amuse. But their impeccable sense of how to make the more disturbing aspects of life seem amusing has never been more evident than in this film.
Set in Royston Vasey (the despicable Northern town so familiar to viewers of their television programme), the narrative follows Reverend Bernice Woodhall as she is visited by three people desperately in need of her help. The first is Charlie Hull, whose dreams of his wife's forays into witchcraft have left him fearing for his marriage and his life. The second, an elderly man who is haunted each Christmas by memories of a terrifying supernatural encounter he suffered in the small German town of Duisberg back in 1914. The last visitor, very dear to the hearts of the League's multitude of fans, is Mr Matthew Chinnery, 'Vasey's incompetent vet, whose tale reveals the dark secret behind the "accidents" which have killed so many of his patients. But I'm afraid, dear reader, that you will have to watch it yourself to find out what effect these stories have on the hard-hearted vicar of Royston Vasey...
The League loves to make reference to its favourite influences, and this Christmas Special is an homage to every type of horror film imaginable, from the German expressionist film "Nosferatu" to 'Salems Lot. The three pieces are genuinely eerie, but moments of humour are frequent and memorable, and the wrap-around story a lovely take on Dickens' "A Christmas Carol".
A wonderful treat at Christmas or any time of the year, and another triumph for a group who persist in simultaneously delighting and horrifying its audience.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 April 2004The League of Gentlemen do it again! This Christmas Special shows just howvital the quartet are to the British comedy scene.
At the time this was a big departure for the Gents - losing the 'sketch'feel of previous series', ditching the often annoying laughter track andreplacing them with deeper characterisation and a film-like narrativetelling three 20-minute stories. A risky business, but they pull it off sowell you wonder why they don't just do things this way all the time!Series 3, which followed this, was definitely on par with, if not betterthan the Special, although some people strangely dislike it.....what theymust put in their cornflakes I have no idea. Maybe Mr. Briss's SpecialStuff...
If you watch this you, like me, won't be able to wait for their muchanticipated full movie which is planned for cinema release next spring. They've yet to put a foot wrong in my eyes.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 July 2014For those expecting a nice light Christmas Special to watch before you go to bed on Christmas Eve...try elsewhere. Not that there isn't humour here but it's dark, very dark- in particular the ending. It was the Christmas Special that shifted the comedy towards something much darker and bleaker, without any catchphrases to comfort you (well, apart from two catchphrases that would send shivers down anyone's spine).
Irreverent Reverend Bernice suffers yet another miserable Christmas; Christmas being a time associated with an awful event from her past. She is visited by three characters, each with their own story: Charlie suspects Stella of meeting with a sinister group of ladies who dabble in voodoo; an elderly man tells of his time as a foreign exchange student visiting Duisburg and encountering Herr Lipp, who may well be a vampire; and finally Dr Chinnery tells of how his family line has become cursed.
The Christmas Special is a portmanteau film (well, a double-length episode to be precise); basically three separate stories within a larger story. Series 3, if watched in one sitting, has a similar effect. The style does work well as it gives structure, although many would probably have been happy enough with a run of sketches with a Christmassy theme, seeing as we all switch our brains off around that time of year. The plus point of doing it this way though is that the special doubles nicely as a Halloween special, as it is the most overtly horror-inspired.
I'm not a big fan of horror so I can't pick out the various allusions in the way that others would be able to. However this doesn't impair the enjoyment; it merely makes things creepily uncomfortable. The first story is the least 'scary' but the most 'funny', as Stella is at her bitchiest and most emasculating. There is of course an underlying sadness in Charlie and Stella's marriage which makes them compelling characters; recognisable in a more sombre sense. It's the perfect blend of League pathos with comedy, pushing their grotesquerie ever closer to something quite bleak.
The second story is full-out black comedy but those with a sensitive disposition might want to check out at this point. Herr Lipp is at his most malapropic- unless the Fruedian slips are intentional of course. Whilst he is a sinister character, his feebleness makes him 'safe', and Matthew, the 'boy' he is persuing, is Reece Shearsmith in a blond wig. The moment where he watches Matthew undress through a peep hole is grusomely funny and yet also quite sad. This story is full of brilliantly quotable lines and a moment akin to Uncle Monty paying 'I' a night visit in Withnail and I. Hilarious.
The third story is a spoof of Victorian horror tales and is refreshingly unbleak in an episode that's bleaker than a desolate snowy landscape.
The ending is horrific, complicating the League's genre even more. Is it a comic horror or a horrific comedy? The continuity is kept in Series 3, strengthening my view that The League of Gentlemen developed and evolved in a way that no other comedy series has or will.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2009i loved the league of gentlemen since it first came on the bbc all those years ago. As expected this is not the usual type of christmas special, in keeping with the leagues type of humour it quiet dark but in a funny way. I loved the story of how the vet dr chinnerys bad record with helping animals is a curse that goes back to his great grandfather an excellent story. as you would come to expect the writing is first class as is the acting. I would recommend this to all league fans an essential part of your dvd collection.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 December 2021Only had a recording off the TV so decided to get a proper copy. Definitely not your average Christmas viewing but exactly how I like my Christmas to be.

The DVD arrived very quickly in good condition. The Special itself is so funny that one will laugh out loud throughout the entire episode. I recommend the Gentlemen for any one that loves British comedy at it's very best!
