Product Description
A series that looks at the life of a family that runs an independent funeral home and how they cope with grief of their own.
Amazon.co.uk Review
Six Feet Under is not just a smartly written, sublimely acted soap that happens to be set in a funeral home; it's a profound mixture of emotional truths and whimsical black comedy that uses its setting to comment upon the way we live, with the omnipresent spectre of death throwing life's problems into sharp relief. Creator Alan Ball (American Beauty) understands modern neuroses more than most, it seems, and his rich sense of the absurd is given added potency, not to say piquancy, by the sometimes comically ridiculous juxtaposition of life and death.
The first series introduces the Fisher family, whose already weighty emotional baggage is bolstered by the sudden demise of their patriarch, who has willed the family funeral home to his two initially hostile sons, wayward Nate (Peter Krause) and in-the-closet David (Michael C Hall). Teenage younger sister Claire (Lauren Ambrose) and repressed mother Ruth (Frances Conroy) have their own problems, as does put-upon mortician Federico (Freddy Rodriguez). The first year's unfolding story arc includes the family's resistance to a hostile big corporation, Nate's budding romance with wild card Brenda (stunningly good Rachel Griffiths), David's attempts to reconcile his Christian faith with his homosexuality, Claire's self-destructive boyfriend trouble and Ruth's gradual realisation that, although she was a wife and is a mother, she's entitled to have a life too.
On the DVD: Six Feet Under, Series 1 spreads 13 episodes across four discs. Care has been taken to reflect the show's stylish look in everything from the novel external packaging to the menu layouts. Picture is good, but only standard 4:3 ratio, though sound is vivid Dolby 5.1. The bonus features include two episode commentaries from creator Alan Ball, who happily chats about the pilot and the season finale, both of which he wrote and directed. There's a 22-minute "Behind the Scenes" featurette--standard HBO fare with cast interviews. More interesting is "Under the Main Titles", which explores Digital Kitchen's creation of the fascinating opening title sequence and talks to genius composer Thomas Newman about his theme music. The music can also be heard in an audio-only track as well as in Kid Loco's "Graveyard" remix. Text biographies, episode synopses and Web links complete the extras. One minor niggle: there's no "Play All" facility, so you can't indulge the luxury of watching uninterrupted episodes back-to-back. --Mark Walker

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 May 2004Ive not written into amazon with a review before, but six feet under is something truly remarkable and ive become a complete evangelist about it since i caught five minutes of it recently on tv. You just gotta see this!
Having caught the end of the third series of it on C4, I instantly went back to get the first season. I really believe its an achievement on par with the awesome german series Heimat. Groundbreaking, challenging, difficult, gripping, funny, tender and on occasions just plain jaw dropping. And the quality doesn't dip one bit, a remarkable feat by its creative team.
I felt compelled to write as when put against Brit series like Cold Feet, This Life et al it blows them out of the water for the trite, middle class piffle they are. i hate to say it but american TV is actually putting us in the shade when they produce stuff like this. (something i thought id never say)
The writing is sharp, the acting is sublime and the direction makes a mockery of all those whirling camera shots you see nowadays that are supposed to convey 'energy' (that just look like the directors dont know what theyre doing). its precise, sparse and innovative, allowing the characters and story full reign. i devoured all 13 episodes in 3 days, im now a nervous wreck waiting til the second series comes out.
i think britain is still very strong in comedy and you'll see echoes of great stuff like the league of gentlemen and jam in this, why can't we be so good at drama?
Im no US obsessed geek either, i liked sopranos and the film american beauty from SFU's creator alan ball but this is the real deal. its not without some flaws, but its ability to sustain such intensity for an episode let alone a whole series is beyond belief. interstingly the review here who moaned about the characters missed the point as to what makes the series great. why should they all be nice and easy to identify with? for once i felt a series was really getting into what makes us all tick, good and bad, and that we all deserve to be recognised for what we do on this planet. but there's no mawkish sentiment, just a sense that we should all take notice of the show's tagline "everyday above ground is a good one'.
British drama had better get its act together, cos stuff like Cutting It, just aint cutting it. Seeing stuff like this really shows what an incredible medium tv can be in the right hands. Not one episode wouldn't make a compelling piece of cinema in its own right.
There, ive got it off my chest. Do yourself a favour and watch this now. For once believe the hype, as even that doesn't come close to what this series has achieved.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2005A few days ago I watched the final Episode of Six Feet Under. As a film student who wants to work in television I pray that someday I can be involved in a show that has a fraction of the power, honesty and beauty that Six Feet Under has. This show deals with the human condition better than anything I have ever seen or read. Every character is flawed, either filled with self doubt, regret, self loathing and a huge amount of other negative emotions but you will come to care for them more than any other character in any other work because their flaws make them easy to relate to and their quests to happiness is even more poignant because of it. We are painted such an excellent portrait of a family that we end up feeling part of it and we are able to laugh, love and grieve with them. This review is aimed at people who missed it on t.v. and are interested in watching it. I implore you if you are one of these people beg, borrow or steal to get your hands on these D.V.D.s and get ready to have your life changed
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2008When six feet under aired in 2001 it was so fresh and invigorating that it just swept me off my feet,it was a show that mixed dark humour with surreal comedy and a deep hurtful glance at the world,it had it all,in the following years it has lost some of its shine and appeal but not much, but i must whip out a fair review for all.
Six feet under deals with the fisher family, they are funeral directors who deal with death and emotion and expression at every turn, but they hide their own while they help strangers deal with theirs.
Each episode starts with a death and then we move on from there,we get the dead talking to members of the family and in truth this is a good tactic,it is sort of like their conscience talking to them, thats my opinion anyway,we also get surreal comedy much like that of the mind of J.D in scrubs and that makes for funny viewing,of course alot of what you view is tragic and a tear can take shape at any juncture if you are willing to suppress the fact that this is tv,and in many ways this is vital telly,it has a self belief of its own, there is a sense of pushing the envelope of pain too much in places, the use of billy makes for annoying viewing at time and the screaming and weeping can bring you too your knees at times but this is what it is ,great stuff but not as magic as i once thought.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 April 2010I bought all five dvd-boxsets of this tv-show after being recommended by many friends and after seeing the rave reviews, I decided I would buy them (as I love most other HBO series) I had no idea what I was getting into but I'm glad I did. This show is one of the best things ever to grace our tv's- truly. This show has depths, it is packed with laughs and tears. After watching the amazing "American Beauty" I did some background research and found that it was written from the same producer (Alan Ball) that wrote for Six Feet Under and writes for "True Blood" after learning this, I immediately began watching. With superb performances from Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Rachael Griffiths (Brothers and Sisters) and Peter Krause (Dirty Sexy Money) this show is one of the few out there that are truly amazing- add this to your basket now- you won't be disappointed. Warning: Contains the odd, graphic sex scene, hard drug use, very strong language and nudity. This show is not rated 15, as indicated by Amazon, it is, in fact, 18, as does the box inform. Happy watching!

5.0 out of 5 stars six feet under
Un mot suffit: formidable! Comme je dois mettre plus de mots, j'adore ce feuilleton il est drôle et en même temps attendrissant. Un peu exagéré mais de toute façon, la réalité dépasse la fiction....
