Bad romantic comedies make you scoff at their absurdity; good ones make you wish your life was that absurd. Just Like Heaven is just smart and likable enough to trigger that wishing. David (Mark Ruffalo, Collateral, You Can Count On Me) finds an amazing apartment in San Francisco--only to discover it's haunted by the spirit of the previous tenant, an overachieving doctor named Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde, Election).

There's something not quite right about Elizabeth's afterlife; against his better judgement, David agrees to help her investigate her life...but finds himself digging into his own as well. The plot takes a twist that some viewers will see coming, but Just Like Heaven doesn't rely on the surprise alone; the revelation takes the story in a new and just as entertaining direction. Witherspoon and Ruffalo are two of the best romantic leads around, but the surprise is how well their contrasting flavors (perky and moody, respectively) mesh, creating a sparky, engaging chemistry. Also featuring Dina Waters (Freaky Friday), Donal Logue (The Tao of Steve), Ben Shenkman (Angels in America), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). Crisply directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), who carefully keeps the supernatural from getting silly and the romance from getting gooey. --Bret Fetzer

    So let's face it, nearly every film is just amazing for some people and just awful for others, and this is probably no exception. If you want to snuggle up on the sofa and lose yourself in something that makes you laugh, cry, smile and keep believing in romance and a fairy tale happy ending, then this is definitely for you, My other half was completely wrapped up in the story and he is a 6ft 4in gory horror movie loving boy who is obviously a real softie at heart - apparently this has leap frogged in to his top 10 favourites now! OK so I'll own up and say that we are both big Reese Witherspoon fans, so I guess that has made us a bit biased. It's a close run thing between this and Sweet Home Alabama as they are both so great, and I'd be hard pushed to say which one I liked the best. Just Like Heaven also has a really top soundtrack - especially Colors by Amos Lee. Treat yourself - you won't be disappointed.

    I saw this film at the cinema on its release date in the UK and I was glad that I went.
    The plot is simple:
    Witherspoon plays a Elizabeth Masterson, a doctor who's a workaholic. On her way home one day she is involved in an accident.
    David (Ruffalo) rents an apartment. One evening Elizabeth appears and starts telling him to get out of her apartment. At first he thinks he's imagining things but then realises she's a ghost -- the question is will she accept that?
    The film starts off funny but, as it progresses, it gets sweeter. He spends his time trying to straighten out the mess they're both in whilst trying to convince the people around him that he's not going crazy (he's the only one who can see her).
    I love supernatural romance and this is one of the better films in that genre. The characters are believable and the development of both plot and characters is well handled. There are one or two silly scenes in the name of comedy but they are, fortunately, not many.

    The film has been very well researched and follows an extremely plausible story line. I had to watch it several times to pick up all the subtle points and cross-references to earlier dialogue. Although following a particular scenario, the film is apparently founded on a deep knowledge/conviction that there is no death in that one is not a body but an eternal intelligence/consciousness/soul inhabiting a body. The film's message may be extrapolated to all manner of life-critical circumstances and has the potential to illuminate a deep inner knowing within the watcher. Leaves a positive after-glow for a very long time.

    I watched this the other night in utter bliss. There's absolutely nothing in it to make you have to think or feel bad about anything. It's just pure romance and laughter as a rom com should be.

    It tells the story of Elizabeth, a doctor in a very busy hospital, who while on her way home one night is involved in a car crash. The next thing we know is that the loveable David has moved into her apartment and she is walking through tables and is unable to pick things up! David is convinced that he's either hallucinating or that she's a ghost!

    Enter Jon Heder as a spiritual reader of sorts for a few extra laughs. This is quite simply lovely, sweet and very predictable, but who cares when it leaves you feeling this happy? I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be watching it again and again. I'd recommend this movie if you like rom coms in general but especially if you liked films like Bridgette Jones or Love Actually.
