Product Description
Complete first series of the situation comedy based on the testing times of Bernard Black (Dylan Moran, who also co-writes), misanthropic bookshop owner extraordinaire. Bernard loves books but hates customers, and his approach to capitalism is only matched by Fran (Tamsin Greig), the owner of the 'Nifty Gifty' giftshop nextdoor. When Bernard's accountant goes on the run he is replaced by oddball accountant Manny Bianco (Bill Bailey) who saves Bernard from the terrors of doing his own book-keeping, and proves a hit with the customers. Further episodes see this mismatched retail duo becoming obsessed with the Sweeney, getting into hot water during some routine house-sitting, and suffer defeat at the hands of the new shop security system.
Amazon.co.uk Review
One of the few genuinely outstanding British comedy shows of the past decade, Black Books unites excellent comedic performances, very funny scripts, and plenty of rewatch value.
The concept is simple enough. Bernard (expertly played by Dylan Moran) runs a bookshop. The only problems are he can't stand people, hates customers, and would far prefer to be barking out cutting remarks and drinking wine. Still, it's after drinking much of the aforementioned wine that he offers Manny (Bill Bailey, again in terrific form) a job. Manny accepts, and finds his daily life involves taking abuse from Bernard, while remaining strangely and resolutely upbeat. Fran (Tamsin Greig) meanwhile also likes her wine, and finds herself stuck between the two of them, with a few odd encounters of her own thrown in too.
So far nothing particularly out of the ordinary, right? Well, mix in some of the creative force behind Father Ted, combine those aforementioned performances, and simmer to the point where episode after episode garners a cocktail of sniggers and belly laughs, and you have something really rather special. Like many of the best shows, the curtain has come down on Black Books after only three series. But the long-lasting legacy are episodes that are set to be enjoyed for a long, long time to come. --Simon Brew

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 June 2010I re-bought this DVD, having lost it from the full series set (someone I lent it to obviously loved it too). The first episode in particular is one of the funniest things I've ever watched: the main characters are outrageous caricatures of people we all know, in a perfectly ordinary setting; the dynamics between the characters are perfect; the humour is totally offbeat, without ever being crude; there's an element of slapstick mixed with a fair amount of witty dialogue. I watch it often with my children and it causes gales of laughter every time. The ideal remedy for boredom on a rainy day.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2013Black Books is a gem of the sitcom world. Why oh why do more4 persist with endless reruns of Father Ted. When they could show this.
Indeed, this could be called a secular Ted. Black is Father Jack, Fran is Father Ted. while Manny is Father Dougal with a brain.
A joy from start to finish. If you work in a shop, haven't an of you wanted to act like Bernard Black?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 June 2022I had lost my discs so I bought this series to replace the missing discs
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2017Kept seeing this in list of dvd sitcoms recommended for me so tried it. Typical sitcom but the stress of the owner I can sympathise with things seem to keep going wrong. So give it 4 stars not bad and one of the better sitcoms mildly funny.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 December 2020Funny tv series featuring Bill Bailey and Dylan Moran.
An Irish alcoholic bookstore keeper with a non hospitable atmosphere, absolutely genius.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 December 2016Well, I knew this is one of the best TV-shows ever made before I bought it (got it as a christmas gift for my parents). But I will say it again: Absolutely no regrets in buying this masterpiece.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2014Such a funny series, watched this with my friend years ago, and wanted to relive the memories. Not many episodes, but if you love this, there are another 2 seasons!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Parfait

5.0 out of 5 stars Wo bleibt der Rest...

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh till you cry -- inspired madness
Bernard Black is a self-absorbed drunken curmudgeon who would be pathetic if he didn't live surrounded by other people as crazy as he is, in their own way. He sells books, apparently, though he seems to have trouble not driving away his own customers. Screwball comedy as only the British Isles can produce, helmed in this case by the frenetic and acerbic wit of veteran Irish stand-up artist Dylan Moran. I haven't laughed so hard in ages, and am now watching everything I can find of Moran's work on video and YouTube. The series is hard to find for Region 1, and I had to buy a used copy of this first season. Fortunately it played just fine. So glad to have the whole set in my video library now, to take a place of honor next to Fawlty and Blackadder.
