About Adam

Suitable For 15 Years And Over.Info Stars: Stuart Townsend, Frances O'Connor, Charlotte Bradley, Kate Hudson, Rosaleen Linehan, Tommy Tiernan, Donal Beecher, Alan Maher

Director: Gerard Stembridge

Summary: Lucy Owen has fallen head over heels in love with Adam, and on the surface he seems to be perfect for her. But is there more to Adam than she first thought?...

Irish screenwriter, playwright, and director Gerard Stembridge's glib romantic comedy is a tale of familial sexual intrigue told from the multiple perspectives of three sisters and their brother. In stark contrast to rural cinematic visions of Ireland like WAKING NED DEVINE, Stembridge's story is set in a glittering, hiply urbane Dublin. Lucy Owens, (Kate Hudson) a waitress-cum-singer in a sleek cafe, has a romantic past littered with boyfriends, but not one great passion. Things change for the pretty singer when she meets the sexy, shy Adam (Stuart Townsend), whose sweetness charms both Lucy and her family. Behind the wide-eyed facade, however, Adam is a roguish serial seducer, who begins to work his magic on Lucy's repressed, bookish sister Laura (Frances O'Connor). With tragic flair, the sensual Adam recites poetry angling to get into the Victorian mind, heart and bed of Laura. Matters are further complicated when the oblivious Lucy proposes to the caddish chameleon, and her older, wiser sister, Alice (Charlotte Bradley) and brother, David, (Alan Maher) begin to suspect Adam's apparent perfection. Stembridge's farcical sexual romp features a young, talented cast and is a firmly tongue-in-cheek examination of sexual morality and family relationships.

Editor's Review

amazon.co.uk Directed by playwright Gerard Stembridge, About Adamis a charmingly funny romantic comedy set against an unusually trendy Dublin backdrop. Adam (Stuart Townsend) is the sweetly bashful young man for whom singing bistro waitress Lucy (Kate Hudson) falls. She introduces him to her family who adore him, she proposes marriage to him from onstage, he accepts. However, in a clever series of flashbacks and alternative narrative perspectives, we see that Adam has shown very different sides of his character and told a very different story about himself in seducing Lucy's bookish sister Laura (Frances O'Connor), her older, unhappily married sister Alice (Charlotte Bradley) and even inducing a deeply embarrassing boyish infatuation in young brother David. Two questions arise; which of these is the "real" Adam? And will he be exposed and punished as a bounder?

The resolution, when it comes, is as pleasingly unpredictable as the film itself, which not only resolutely avoids the usual rustic clichés of skirling soundtracks and verdant scenery usually deployed in Irish films, but, in its deceptively light way, poses some pertinent questions about romance, fidelity and truth, while filling you with a warm glow.

On the DVD:Presented in audio options 5.1 and 2.0. The disc contains various extras, including trailer, interviews with cast and director (in which Gerard Stembridge explains that Adam is "a joke on the New Man") and b-roll footage. However, the interviews are sloppily edited, while the b-roll footage consists of little than various inconsequential outtakes, which look like they've been grabbed randomly from the cutting room floor and sellotaped together. --David Stubbs
