Life in the ruthless African Serengeti National Park can be hard and unforgiving. This is the lesson every wild animal has to learn as soon as it is able to stand. Addo, a young and fierce lion, doesn’t escape the rule and when he is rejected by his original pride, he finds himself wandering alone across the bare Savannah. He faces the difficult and merciless reality of the wilderness until he meets a new companion, with which he shares the tribulations of everyday life and the joys of fatherhood. Addo finally reaches adulthood and becomes the king of a new pride. Shot over a period of two years by acclaimed documentarian Hugo Van Lawick, ADDO THE AFRICAN KING is a dramatised wildlife film that combines the immediacy of African factual reality, with the element of fantasy, attained through dubbing the animals’ voices. The documentary is the third instalment of a big cat trilogy, the previous two chapters being THE LEOPARD SON and THE CHEETAH STORY.
