Drummer Art Blakey was one of the true legends of jazz. Born in 1919, Blakey served as apprentice to Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie before forming his own Jazz Messengers in 1955. The Messengers were pivotal in advancing the bebop sound and nurtured the careers of future legends Wayne Shorter, Johnny Griffin, Wynton Marsalis, and many others. This feature captures Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers live at the famed Village Vanguard club in New York City in 1982.
