Summary: The sheriff and the madame are determined to keep the whorehouse open and the two join together not only in romance, but also to fight a big city TV crusader who wishes to expose the whorehouse to public scandal, and thus close it down.

Reynolds is the local sheriff who is more interested in keeping the town's most popular business open than carrying out the letter of the law. Parton is the whorehouse madame who also happens to hold the sheriff's interest. Academy Award Nominations: Best Supporting Actor--Charles Durning.

This is an energetic, but ultimately mediocre adaptation of the play, directed on Broadway by Tommy Tune. Burt Reynolds is the town sheriff and a regular patron of a local bordello. He wages a public battle to keep it open after it is targeted as the devil's den by a television minister. Charles Durning won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and there are some lively song and dance numbers featuring Dolly Parton as the madam of the Chicken Ranch.
