Summary: The lives of a dysfunctional New York family are disrupted when their estranged father re-appears after 15 years.
When ex-cop Tom (Roy Scheider) returns home to New York after a 15 year absence, his wife Nora (Olympia Dukakis) and their three grown daughters must rebuild their lives. This may sound fairly commonplace, but the family’s handling of the situation is anything but typical. Nora has some wildly eccentric ideas--like digging through the basement floor with a sledgehammer; her brother Jack (Edward Herrmann) is a faithless priest who counsels the family through their reunion; and the less said about Tom’s parenting skills the better. Bizarrely, the family settles into a makeshift shelter in their basement and live like survivalists. BETTER LIVING is a dark and oddly humorous portrait of dysfunctional family life, brought to life by a first-rate cast.
