Summary: This Martin Lawrence double bill presents BLACK KNIGHT and BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE, featuring Martin going medieval and turning into Big Momma, respectively.
BLACK KNIGHT: Sharply directed by Gil Junger, this Martin Lawrence comedy borrows its theme from A CONNECTICUT YANKEE AT KING ARTHUR'S COURT, with Mark Twain's Yankee being replaced by Jamal Walker (Lawrence). Jamal works at a decrepit California theme park in danger of being put out of business by a rival theme park. Cleaning Medieval World's moat, he falls into the water, only to recover in 14th-century England. There, Jamal meets Sir Knolte (Tom Wilkinson), a dissolute knight, before he stumbles into the court of the usurper King Leo (Kevin Conway). Jamal is impressed at what he thinks is the realism of the rival theme park; only after witnessing a gory beheading does he realize, with horror, where he really is. Jamal encounters the beautiful Victoria (Marsha Thomason) who is scheming to return the Queen (Helen Carey) to the throne, and falls foul of the evil Sir Percival (Vincent Regan). Joining forces with Sir Knolte and Victoria, Jamal teaches the rebels some helpful football, golfing, and boxing moves, before he dons the armor of the awesome Black Knight. BLACK KNIGHT is full of Lawrence's broad humor, and he and classically trained Wilkinson have great fun playing off each other.
BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE: FBI Agent Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence) is a master of disguise who can transform himself to resemble anyone in order to crack a case. When a brutal criminal breaks out of prison to regain his hoard of stolen money, his former girlfriend Sherry (Nia Long) flees with her son to her childhood home in Georgia, where her grandmother Hattie Mae lives, known to her friends as Big Momma. The FBI learns that Big Momma has been called away suddenly on family business, and in order to keep Sherry under surveillance, Agent Turner must take on the role of a lifetime: Big Momma herself. Can Turner find out where the hidden money is and cook a southern-style dinner at the same time while also falling in love with the sweet, innocent Sherry

Editor's Review

amazon.co.uk A predictable vehicle for the resistable Martin Lawrence, Black Knight is yet another rerun of Mark Twain's Connecticut Yankee at the Court of King Arthur concept which here plays like a horror-free, considerably less funny take on Army of Darkness. Jamal (Lawrence), minion in a mediaeval theme park, reaches into a moat for a magic amulet and is transported to the 14th century, where he is appalled by the toilet facilities, pals around with a disgraced knight (an equally disgraced Tom Wilkinson), romances a feminist lady-in-waiting (Marsha Thomason), introduces soul music to the court in a bit done better in A Knight's Tale, and becomes the legendary black knight to help the rebels overthrow the wicked king. It has a bigger, more lavish feel than most of Lawrence's makeshift knockabouts, but that may also be why it is even less funny, since his rants are rather reined-in and his screen character comes across as just overly pleased with himself rather than a comic foul-up who turns heroic. --Kim Newman

No-one tries very hard in Big Momma's House so your enjoyment of this Martin Lawrence vehicle pretty much depends on how much amusement you are able to derive from a guy dressed up as a very ample woman. The setup is of the eye-rolling, only-in-Hollywood nature: Lawrence, as detective Malcolm Turner, is after a killer, and apparently the only way to capture him is to pose as the bad guy's ex-girlfriend's grandmother, who--the film cannot stress this point too much--is quite large. Apparently, Sherry (Nia Long), the young woman in question--she's as attractive as Big Momma is, well, you know--is none too bright, for she falls for Malcolm's ruse, which of course ostensibly amuses mainly because it's so transparent. Paul Giamatti is wasted as Malcolm's partner, while director Raja Gosnell's clunky sense of comic rhythm is bewildering, because he used to be an editor (he brought a similar lack of magic to Home Alone 3). Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps is far more accomplished, versatile and funny. --David Kronke
