Summary: In the 1970s, straight-laced curator Sam Wagstaff met bad boy photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, whose homoerotic photographs would send shockwaves across the art world. Wagstaff saw great untapped potential in Mapplethorpe, so he used his extensive connections to get his young protege the recognition he deserved. In return, Mapplethorpe introduced Wagstaff to a hedonistic lifestyle of gay sex and drugs that would ultimately lead to both men's demise. James Crump's documentary turns the lens on their personal relationship, their connection to the musician-poet Patti Smith, and the indelible mark they left on New York's '70s and '80s art scene.
