Summary: Musical tale set in Hawaii of a U.S. serviceman who returns home to Honolulu and becomes a beachcomber.
In a return to musical comedy after several dramatic roles, Elvis Presley stars in this vehicle tailored to his singing talents. Chad Gates (Presley) returns home to Honolulu after a stint in the service. He shows little interest in working for his overbearing parents' pineapple plantation, much to their dismay. Instead, Chad finds a job as a tour guide and thereby gives himself a chance to dance with, and sing to, a variety of Hawaii's most beautiful women. The film includes musical numbers such as "Blue Hawaii," "Rock-A-Hula Baby," "Hawaiian Wedding Song" and "Island of Love," as well as the immortal "Can't Help Falling in Love."

Elvis Presley's seventh film was the first of his "Hawaii trilogy" (a group completed by Girls! Girls! Girls!and Paradise, Hawaiian Style). While its story is daft--the King has just been released from his army-posting in Italy and returned to the islands, where he's trying to avoid working in his father's fruit business--the music, including "Blue Hawaii," "Almost Always True" and the beautiful "Can't Help Falling in Love", is not. Angela Lansbury plays Elvis's mother, who can't seem to get through to him. The film is directed by Elvis's frequent collaborator, Norman Taurog. --Tom Keogh
