Broadcast News (Wide Screen)

Suitable For 15 Years And Over.Info Stars: William Hurt, Holly Hunter, Albert Brooks, Robert Prasky

Director: James L. Brooks

Summary: Tom Grunick is the perfect anchor-man, handsome and charming. Jane Craig is the hotshot producer who is responsible for making Tom look like a newsman. Aaron Altman is the reporter, jealous of Tom on-camera with the public and off-camera with Jane. This is the story of their lives.

James Brooks directs this satirical comedy about three ambitious TV newscasters. Tom Grunick (William Hurt), a rising anchorman, has plenty of on-camera savvy, personality and good looks but little in the way of brains. He may be dumb as a doornail but Tom's got the star presence his network needs. Then there's Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks), a less than good-looking newsman, who's dedicated, diligent and down-to-earth. Aaron would love to be an anchor but he freezes up the moment he's in front of the camera, sweating profusely. Smart news producer Jane Craig (Holly Hunter) is excellent at her job but has difficulty handling the pressure. Can these workaholics mask their personal quirks long enough to jump-start their professional lives

Editor's Review

amazon.co.uk Holly Hunter plays a network news producer who, much to her chagrin, finds herself falling for pretty-boy anchorman William Hurt. He is all glamour without substance and represents a hated shift from hard news toward packaged "infotainment", which Hunter despises. Completing the triangle is Albert Brooks, who provides contrast as the gifted reporter with almost no presence on camera. He carries a torch for Hunter; she sees merely a friend. Written and directed by James L. Brooks, Broadcast Newsshows remarkable insight into the people who make television. On the surface the film is about that love triangle. If you look a little deeper, however, you will see that this behind-the-scenes comedy is a very revealing look at obsessive behaviour and the heightened emotions that accompany adrenaline addiction. It is for good reason this was nominated for seven Academy Awards (though it did not win any). There are scenes in this movie you cannot shake, such as Hunter's scheduled mini-breakdowns, or Brooks' furious "flop sweat" during his tryout as a national anchor. Watch for an uncredited Jack Nicholson as a senior newscaster. --Rochelle O'Gorman
