Summary: Two women who meet by chance and become friends go on to commit murder.
Michael Winterbottom's first theatrical feature is a wildly anarchic road movie in which two lesbians fall for each other while speeding through Northern England on a murder spree. Amanda Plummer stars as the exuberantly off-kilter Eunice and Saskia Reeves plays the obsessive Miriam, who falls under Eunice's peculiar spell when she stumbles into her gas station one unassuming afternoon looking for someone named Judith. Little does she realize that Eunice is a cold-blooded killer without any semblance of a conscience. By the time she does discover Eunice's predilection for murder, she's too head-over-heels in love with her to do the right thing and turn her in. Miriam becomes so obsessed with her new lover, that when she discovers a body in the trunk of Eunice's car, she insists they bury it quickly so that no one will find out. As they continue their journey to nowhere, Miriam delves into Eunice's tantalizing and reckless world of murder and begins to wonder if she can separate right from wrong herself. Winterbottom's off-kilter comedy features an electrifyingly insane performance from Plummer, and incorporates a soundtrack by tough girl bands that is a good compliment to the proceedings (PJ Harvey, Bjork, The Cranberries, etc.).
