Summary: She idles away her life watching operas performed at the theatre and playing mahjong. In time she would seek out the chance to meet her former lover, an actor who plays the role of a cavalier. But her secret meetings are discovered by her husband's second concubine who seizes the opportunity to realise her ulterior motives in telling all to their husband and master. Frustrated and agonized, the young woman despairingly lights all the red lanterns in the courtyard enraging her husband who puts the adulterous lovers and his second concubine to death. In the emotional final scene the two concubines make a dying pact of forgiveness and love.
