I loved the original film at the cinema, and the extended version puts right a few unanswered questions. Kevin Costner always hinted that he may do a follow up to one of his early blockbuster, and I always hoped it would be Dances with Wolves. This special extended edition goes some way towards not having a follow up. The advantage of an extended DVD is that you can watch it at your own pace at home, and I really like the icon set up that shows which parts were added or edited. A must buy for fans of this film.

About time too . Why can't the wonderfully gifted Kevin Costner continue to make films like this gem . This 3 disc extended version
really puts things into perspective and adds a new dimension to this
blockbuster of a movie which surely must be one of the best westerns ever made. Dances With Wolves was brilliant at the pictures , this widescreen , 3 disc extended version should shut up any Costner critics for good as it really shows how the Indians suffered at the hands of the fork tongue whiteman. This is how a western should be made , just simply brilliant.

Dances with Wolvesis the film that sent director-producer-actor Kevin Costner on his hubristic way; yet it is such a resonant and powerful film that we can almost forgive him for inflicting upon us his later "epic" The Postman. Here Costner plays a Union solder stationed at the far edges of the West, and left there to rot at his post. He finally sees the wisdom of the Lakota Sioux and finds peace within their community. But his decision to "go native" is greatly frowned upon by his military commanders, and the subsequent culture clash forms the backbone of the narrative. The story is told simply, and wastes not one word of dialogue, while the South Dakota locations provide a magnificent backdrop. Costner is sympathetic and accessible as an American Everyman who awakens to himself and the world around him... --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com
