Summary: Former cowboy legend Howard Spence quits his latest film shoot and embarks on a cross-country journey of denial and self-discovery. Now he must face up to past indiscretions and take responsibility for his actions.
Washed-up Hollywood cowboy legend Howard Spence heads home to Elko, Nevada to see his lonely mother for the first time in thirty years, and to escape his troubles. Depressed that he can only get supporting roles, former film star Howard’s (Sam Shepard) life is on a steady downward spiral of drink, drugs and one night stands. Abandoning the set of his latest project, he returns to his childhood hometown and elderly mother (Eva Marie Saint), unaware that the studio’s insurance company has hired a private detective, Sutter (Tim Roth), to track him down and bring him back to finish the $32 million movie he started. Howard is shocked to discover that an affair he once had with small-town waitress, Doreen (Shepard’s real-life wife, Jessica Lange), resulted in the birth of a child. He grabs this glimmer of hope in an otherwise meaningless existence, and sets about finding his long-lost son, a rock musician living in Butte, Montana. An explosive family reunion ensues. DON’T COME KNOCKING re-teams Sam Shepard and director Wim Wenders (PARIS, TEXAS), who serve up yet another insightful, offbeat look into the American psyche. Shepard is terrific as Spence, a man unafraid to grit his crooked teeth and bare his beat-up soul. Franz Lustig’s arresting cinematography is perfectly complimented by the country soundtrack, produced by T Bone Burnett.
