Ishiro Honda , who was a friend and collaborator of cult moviemaker
Akira Kurasawa , ventured into what was considered at the time ,
Japan's first foray into big budget sci fi - costing twice as much as
Kurasawa's Seven Samurai released the same year . Brilliant .
