In Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING, a local black community is unhappy that their community is effectively being run by whites. As the heat rises on a hot summer's day in Brooklyn, so the racial tension, which has so far lay dormant under the surface, begins to rise.
In 8 MILE, Jimmy 'Rabbit' Smith, Jr. is dumped by his girlfriend and is forced to move in with his mum and little sister, Lily, in a trailer park on the poor side of the 8 Mile Road, Detroit. By day he holds down a badly-paid factory job, but by night he tries to make it as a white rapper in the predominately African-American community.
In BOYZ 'N THE HOOD, a group of teenage boys from Los Angeles' South Central district come to terms with gang warfare and violent life on the streets.
In LOCKDOWN, three friends from the hood--all honest men--are bound to prison sentences they don't deserve after being wrongly convicted of murdering a cop. Once behind bars, they must quickly learn to cope with the brutality of prison life in order to simply survive, and each man reacts to the experience in his own way.
In GRIDLOCK'D, a mismatched pair of Detroit junkies strive to seek help in kicking their heroin habit in government-sponsored programs, only to find themselves drowning in the comical bureaucratic morass of sanctioned detox centres.
