Summary:
Set on the idyllic shores of the Cayman Islands, HAVEN charts the transformation of a sleepy fishing village into a haven for tourists, unscrupulous businessmen, and tax dodgers. This makeover has resulted in a worrying rise in drug trafficking, robberies, and shootings on the previously serene island. When a soft-spoken young fisherman named Shy (Orlando Bloom) falls in love with a minister’s daughter, her disapproving brother--furious over their interracial relationship--attacks Shy, leaving him physically and emotionally scarred. In a separately unfolding sub-plot, businessman Carl Ridley (Bill Paxton) has arrived on the island with his daughter, Pippa (Agnes Bruckner), and a healthy amount of ill-gotten gains. As the Feds close in on him, he seeks help from his ‘advisor’, Mr Allen (Stephen Dillane), who has some major problems of his own. Meanwhile Pippa, upset at being taken away from her home and friends, is courted by Fritz (Victor Rasuk), a fast-talking player who has made enemies of both the island police and a local kingpin. First-time writer-director Frank E Flowers, himself a native Caymanian, has crafted a compelling tale of love and greed, racial tension and cultural change, told through multiple story lines that come surging together in unexpected ways a la TRAFFIC and CRASH. The diverse cast also includes Bobby Cannavale, Jake Webber, Caroline Goodall, Joy Bryant, and Rachel Miner.
