The popular Nickelodeon cartoon HEY ARNOLD! gets its big screen animation debut with this feature, directed by Tuck Tucker. The plot finds the kid with the "football-shaped head" (Arnold, voiced by Spence Klein) working overtime to save his New York City neighbourhood. Paul Sorvino supplies the voice of the sinister corporate bad guy Scheck, who intends to bulldoze Arnold's block in order to make room for a shopping "mall-plex." With the adults too passive to lift a finger in their own defence (or else profiting from the deal), it is up to Arnold to devise a plan. Luckily he has friends to help him out, like Gerald (Jamil Walker Smith) and Helga (Francesca Smith)--the abusive little girl who harbours a secret crush on him. Arnold develops a crush of his own, on Bridget (Jennifer Jason Leigh), the slinky local super hero who helps him out with a little industrial espionage. Other recognisable voices include Christopher Lloyd and Dan Castallenata (Homer on THE SIMPSONS) as Arnold's Grandpa Phil. The simple, colourful animation and amiable story should make it a hit with young children already enthralled by the television show. Series creator Craig Bartlett cowrote the script with Steve Viksten.

Adapted from the popular Nickelodeon show, Hey Arnold!continues the adventures of the blithely cheerful, football-headed Arnold (voice by Spencer Klein) on the big screen.

When corrupt developer Schek (Paul Sorvino) threatens to buy the run-down urban neighbourhood where Arnold lives, he and his best friend Gerald (Jamil Smith) rally the neighbours to keep their homes from being turned into a mega-mall. After their peaceful efforts fail, they turn to espionage in a spoof of Men in Blackand other action films. Hey Arnold!suffers from the same difficulty as many theatrical features spawned from TV cartoons: the characters have to solve a problem that's too big. The James Bond-style gadgetry and car chases don't fit into the slightly skewed vision of fourth-grade life that made the series popular. The limited animation and awkward designs will work better in the video release. --Charles Solomon
