Summary: Eddie Hawkins, the world's greatest cat burglar, has just been freed from prison and is determined not to return. That is until a couple threaten to kill his best friend unless he acquires for them some very valuable works by Da Vinci.

Hudson Hawk (Bruce Willis) has done his time. The infamous cat burglar is released from prison and plans to pursue an honest life. Some of his cronies, however, feel differently and coerce him back into a life of crime. With his best friend, Tommy Five-Tune (Danny Aiello), in tow, Hawk finds himself immersed in a series of complex burglaries, culminating with the theft of a priceless Leonardo da Vinci treasure from the Vatican. Every time Hawk thinks he has the situation under control, a new villain is thrown into the mix. A plethora of quirky characters keeps Hawk hopping, including a misguided secret-agent nun (Andie MacDowell), a greedy, megatrendy couple determined to dominate the world (Sandra Bernhard and Richard E. Grant), a ruthless butler (Donald Burton), and a sinister CIA agent (James Coburn) who heads a team of agents nicknamed after candy bars. Director Michael Lehmann (HEATHERS, AIRHEADS) uses slapstick comedy, special effects, and sight gags to keep the action moving at a raucous pace.

Bruce Willis's awful, 1991 vanity piece is an abuse of audience goodwill and a waste of a good cast and director (Michael Lehmann of Heathers). The story of Hudson Hawk, cowritten by Willis, concerns a cat burglar pressured into stealing precious art, including some from the Vatican. But the script is just a convenience upon which Willis piles his vaguely boorish brand of hip irony, assuming his audience will stay with him every step of the way. Certain, self-congratulatory scenes induce cringing--Willis and Danny Aiello, for instance, sing "Side by Side" (to brassy accompaniment on the soundtrack) every time they're working a job--but the overall effect is more irritating and baffling. Keep a good thought for Willis (an underrated actor better than the summer junk we usually see him in) by checking out his superior work in Pulp Fictionand his small but memorable role in Billy Bathgate. --Tom Keogh
