Summary: Young-gun federal prosecutor Gina Gallagher (Tracey Needham) wins a monumental, career-making case when she dismantles a Colombian drug cartel. Her victory proves to be tenuous though when the cartel commissions a hit man to even the score. Bad aim sends the bullet intended for Gina into her partner's head, forcing Gina to seek protective custody. With the help of her guardian -- gruff homicide detective Moe Ryan (Charles Durning) -- Gina uncovers a vast conspiracy linking the cartel out to kill her with several high-level government officials, including those charged with protecting her. With her life in danger and no where to turn, Gina finds an ally in the most unlikely of men, a former mobster (James Belushi) serving time in the state penitentiary.

This re-mastered, pan-and-scan 30th-anniversary edition of that kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs--including the title tune--are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or does he? The special effects are tame by today's standards, and the film is about 20 minutes too long--but its enthusiasm charms. The script was cowritten by Roald Dahl and based on the novel by Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond adventures. --Rochelle O'Gorman
