Lara Croft has appeared in almost every incarnation possible, from a computer game to a multi-million dollar movie. Lethal and Loadedis a documentary that attempts to uncover some of the mystery surrounding this very English heroine, with interviews from the men who designed her to the men who made her the million-dollar machine she is today. The viewer is treated to a potted history of her heritage, her schooling and how she was brought up. Once the programme has you thinking that perhaps this could be a real person rather than a virtual invention, it changes focus and examines the impact her popularity has had on "obsessed" fans, looking at the extent to which some people have gone to make her a little more than just a computer-generated sex symbol. This documentary succeeds in showing how we are making computer game icons part of our everyday lives. We see people who are having fun with Lara's image and those who have taken it one step further. We also see how far owners Core Design will go to protect their most profitable creation. The documentary mixes videogame footage with live action to good effect and makes you realise that, in the case of Lara Croft and beyond, the line between computer game and reality is becoming increasingly hazy. --Robert Hyde
