Seemingly made by people whose only previous experience of movies was watching Reservoir Dogsand Pulp Fictionover and over again, The Last Days of Frankie the Flyis nonetheless a competent time-passer in a "Tarantino, this is all your fault" kind of way. Frankie (Dennis Hopper) is already disgruntled with life as a small-time gopher for mob-captain Sal (Michael Madsen), when he meets Margaret (Daryl Hannah), an equally depressed porn star whose one burning desire is to become a serious actress (and what, end up in films like this?). With his ardour for Margaret as a catalyst, Frankie decides to make one last desperate bid to get out of the game--and into a career as a Hollywood scriptwriter.
While this wiseguy-with-a-heart caper never rises far above the level of fodder, Madsen and Hopper at least have fun with their QT-patented smart-ass dialogue, and Kiefer Sutherland delivers one of his most genuinely demented performances ever as a troubled Mafia foot soldier (which, for Kiefer Sutherland, is really saying something). At its murky-pool-rooms-and-porn-sets best, The Last Days of Frankie the Flycould almost be a remodelling of John McNaughton's criminally underrated Mad Dog and Glory; at its formulaic worst, it's simply yet another drab Tarantino clone. --Danny Leigh
