Little Big Man

Director: Arthur Penn

Summary: Satirical Western tale of frontier life, seen through the eyes of an aged veteran. Based on the novel by Thomas Berger.

Arthur Penn's film of Thomas Berger's bestselling novel demystifies the old west with it's funny, chaotic portrayal one man's experiences in its closing days. Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman), a 121-year-old Indian living in a rest home, relates his incredible life experiences. According to Crabb's somewhat fanciful tales, he was raised by the Cheyenne from the age of 10 only to be seized by the whites at age 15, followed by a string of failed attempts to find a place for himself in the world. These attempts would bring Jack into contact with (among many others) Wild Bill Hickok, the U. S. Cavalry, a former preacher's wife turned prostitute, his own spunky sister-frontierswoman, and General George Armstrong Custer during the Battle of Little Big Horn. The result is a funny, spiritual film which puts forth a humane view of the plight of Native Americans. Academy Award Nominations: Best Supporting Actor--Chief Dan George.

Editor's Review

amazon.co.uk In Arthur Penn's adaptation of Thomas Berger's novel Little Big Man, Dustin Hoffman stars as Jack Crabb, the only white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn. Giving a bravura performance, Hoffman plays Jack from teen years into old age in this picaresque fable of the Old West. Jack's story is a fantastic one: captured by Indians as a boy, reared as an Indian, shuttling back and forth between the white and Indian worlds. In the process, he befriends everyone from Wild Bill Hickock to George Armstrong Custer and is a gunslinger, a snake-oil salesman and an Army scout. This is a solid blend of comedy and tragedy, making a strong statement about America's treatment of Native Americans without sermonising. A terrific cast includes Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam and Richard Mulligan, but this show is all Hoffman's. --Marshall Fine
