Three friends from the hood--all honest men--are bound to prison sentences they don't deserve after being wrongly convicted of murdering a cop. Once behind bars, they must quickly learn to cope with the brutality of prison life in order to simply survive, and each man reacts to the experience in his own way. College athlete Avery (Richard T. Jones) clings to the encouragement he receives from his girlfriend (Melissa De Sousa), his wise cellmate (Clifton Powell), and the swimming coach (Bill Nunn) who believes in his innocence. Street-smart Cashmere (Gabriel Casseus) quickly adapts to his new environment and joins a gang led by vicious drug dealer Clean Up (Master P). Sensitive Dre (De'Aundre Bonds) suffers the worst fate of the three, resorting to heroin use after being gang-raped by a group of Nazi skinheads. Through the experiences of these characters, the film delivers a portrait of prison life in all its unflinching brutality.
