Summary: An ex-con is given a fresh start by a vice lord, to act as driver/minder to a classy prostitute. He eventually meets up with a pretty under-age hooker and attempts to persuade her away from her sordid life.

In Neil Jordan's MONA LISA, ex-con George (Bob Hoskins), expecting to be repaid after taking a fall for his crime boss, is reduced to driving classy call girl Simone (Cathy Tyson) to her jobs at London's finer hotels. Despite their differences--he's a poorly-educated, unattractive, and unsophisticated bigot; she's a beautiful, elegant, and intelligent black woman--George falls in love with her and agrees to help locate one of her old friends, a junkie still working the streets for a dangerously violent pimp.

infused love story . Bob Hoskins ( who snagged an Oscar for his performance ) plays George , a small time loser employed as a chauffeur to an enigmatic , high class call girl . His fascination with her leads him on a dangerous quest through the sordid underbelly of London , where love is a weakness to be exploited and betrayed .
Also starring Michael Caine , Cathy Tyson and Robbie Colrane .
This is an acclaimed gritty British drama not to be missed .

Julia Roberts' command of the screen is so effortless, it's easy for moviegoers to take her for granted--but we shouldn't. Mona Lisa Smile--about a non-comformist teacher at a private school who encourages students to pursue their individuality--is pretty much an all-girls version of Dead Poets Societythat mixes 50s fashions with 70s feminist thought. However, its lack of ambition doesn't diminish the talent that's gone into it: the writing and directing are well-honed and skilful; the actors--a talent-studded cast featuring Marcia Gay Harden, Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Julia Stiles and Juliet Stevenson--are uniformly excellent. But without question, Mona Lisa Smilerides on Roberts' shoulders and she carries it with ease. She's possibly the only contemporary actor who simply owns a movie the way Bette Davis, Jean Arthur, or Claudette Colbert once did, radiating a engaging mix of intelligence, drive, and emotional warmth that cannot be matched. --Bret Fetzer
