Alec Guinness portrays the title character in this made-for-television adaptation of Graham Greene's novel--itself a meditation on Cervantes' "Don Quixote." A provincial Spanish clergyman embarks on a trip to Madrid with a rigid Communist his only company. The unlikely pair converse to pass the time and, ultimately, reveal their personal philosophies to one another. They realise that they have a great deal in common, particularly their mutual propensity to behave stubbornly. Along the way, however, several situations and circumstances challenge their dyed-in-the-wool beliefs, and even put them in harm's way.
