Director:
Nick Broomfield
Summary: Four films of controversial documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield are collected in this box set, including his most famous offering AILEEN: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A SERIAL KILLER, which inspired the Oscar-winning feature film MONSTER. Also includes KURT AND COURTNEY and BIGGIE AND TUPAC.
In his fearless pursuit of the truth, documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield has uncovered some shocking scandals that have rocked the cinema-going public and polarized opinion. Collected here, is a quartet of the British director’s films, made following his relocation to America. Witness his hard-hitting style of investigative reporting in KURT AND COURTNEY, where he manages to piece together an illuminating portrait of the singer’s tragically short-lived life, despite one of the film’s main subject’s (Courtney Love) refusal to co-operate. Racism and police corruption come under fire in BIGGIE AND TUPAC, a documentary about hip-hop’s infamous East Coast/West Coast rivalry. The film centres on the 1997 shootings and murders of rap superstars Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace (aka Biggie Smalls, the Notorious B.I.G.). Rounding off the set are two fascinating documentaries about Aileen Wuornos; THE SELLING OF A SERIAL KILLER and THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A SERIAL KILLER, the latter earning Broomfield much critical acclaim for his earnest and compassionate depiction of a woman on the edge of society. Wuornos was convicted of killing seven men in the state of Florida and sentenced to death, though some argue she was acting in self-defence. Interestingly, Broomfield was the last person to interview Wuornos before her execution, and elicits a remarkably candid testimonial from her. He has described it as “the most personal and disturbing film I have ever made”.
