Summary: A rebellious and individualistic patient in a mental hospital battles against the repressive nursing regime.

In one of the most memorable indictments of mental institutions, and a subtle examination of male anger, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (based on the novel by Ken Kesey) presents a biting, and ultimately tragic, satire. R.P. McMurphy, a misbehaving con who shirks authority, finds himself in an asylum after faking insanity to get out of work detail in prison. Once in, the vivacious troublemaker finds out he's in a worse kind of prison--one presided over by the repressed, terrifyingly quiet Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), whose taught set of rules and regulations are meant to suppress patients' psychotic outbursts, and their spirits. It's not long before McMurphy is reaching out to his new inmates, trying desperately to bring life to an otherwise dead atmosphere. He becomes the organizer of card games, tries to teach a huge Cree Indian, Chief Bromden (Will Sampson), to shoot baskets, and, when his efforts to allow the patients to see the World Series are thwarted, he mimics the game for his new friends. To Ratched, however, Nicholson's free spirit is as dangerous as a schizophrenic impulse. A disturbing, witty, and electrifying drama, and winner of the Best Picture Oscar, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST is brilliantly acted by an ensemble that includes several future stars such as Christopher Lloyd and Danny DeVito.

Rumour is that a remake is on it's way! If so, it is a very brave decision to make. Nicholson for me, makes this part his own, I'd say it was written for him! The movie is set in the times when mental health knowledge was still almost in the dark ages. The things these hospitals did to keep their patients in line was shocking, and this film lifts the lid. As you would expect with Nicholson, there is still a fair amount of humour. It will leave you entertained, but also educated to these times.

This classic movie, will have you laughing with tears of joy and then shedding tears of sadness in a split second. Jack Nicholson as Randle Patrick McMurphy thinks he has found the ultimate con by pretending to be mad to beat the prison authorities & be sent to a mental institution, but only ends up conning himself. His battles with Louise Fletcher as Nurse Mildred Ratched are funny and threatening. Will Sampson as Chief Bromden is superb and the final encounter with him & McMurphy will take your breath & soul away.

Based on Ken Kesey's acclaimed best selling book , One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest swept all 5 major 1975 Academy Awards and it is easy to see why . Jack Nicholson as Randle P. McMurphy ( this part was just made for this guy ) surely this is his finest performance to date. It's laugh a minute stuff as Randy and his gang
con everyone in sight and have the time of their lives as they wind up Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) and fake insanity to have the time of their lives on various adventures. Pure dead brilliant stuff haha

Editor's Review

amazon.co.uk One of the key movies of the 1970s, when exciting, groundbreaking, personal films were still being made in Hollywood, Milos Forman's One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nestemphasised the humanistic story at the heart of Ken Kesey's more hallucinogenic novel. Jack Nicholson was born to play the part of Randle Patrick McMurphy, the rebellious inmate of a psychiatric hospital who fights back against the authorities' cold attitudes of institutional superiority, as personified by Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). It's the classic antiestablishment tale of one man asserting his individuality in the face of a repressive, conformist system--and it works on every level. Forman populates his film with memorably eccentric faces, and gets such freshly detailed and spontaneous work from his ensemble that the picture sometimes feels like a documentary. Unlike a lot of films pitched at the "youth culture" of the 1970s, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nestreally hasn't dated a bit, because the qualities of human nature that Forman captures--playfulness, courage, inspiration, pride, stubbornness--are universal and timeless. The film swept the Academy Awards for 1976, winning in all the major categories (picture, director, actor, actress, screenplay) for the first time since Frank Capra's It Happened One Nightin 1931. --Jim Emerson
