Summary: A double feature containing the original Disney animated 1953 feature, PETER PAN, and it's 2002 theatrically released sequel, RETURN TO NEVER LAND. See individual titles for further details.
PETER PAN (1953): Join mischievous Peter Pan, the young boy who refuses to grow up, his hot-tempered pixie pal, Tinker Bell and the Darling children as they soar away to the mysterious Never-Never land where childhood lasts forever in this magical, musical adventure. Based on J.M. Barrie's 1904 book.
RETURN TO NEVER LAND (2002): In this sequel to the 1953 Disney classic PETER PAN, Wendy is all grown up, with children of her own. She lives in London, which, as the film starts, is in the midst of the devastating German bombardments of World War II. The hardships of war have made Wendy's daughter Jane a practical, level-headed girl, with little time for her mother's wild stories of Peter Pan and Neverland. Jane doesn't believe in fairies and fantasy lands. That is, not until Captain Hook swoops down in his computer-animated pirate ship to kidnap her and whisk her away through a spectacular space portal into Neverland.
Captain Hook wants Jane as bait to finally catch Peter Pan. The crocodile which plagued Hook in the original film has been replaced by a giant orange octopus. Jane just wants to get back home to London, and decides to help Hook find hidden treasure since he promises to take her home. But in order to finally make it home, Jane must learn to believe in faith, trust, and pixie dust. This sequel primarily uses traditional animation, in the same style as the original film, although some modern computer animation is also used. Fans of the classic PETER PAN will enjoy visiting Neverland again.

Editor's Review

amazon.co.uk Peter Pan soars back onto the screen in Disney's all-new animated feature, Return to Never Land. This sequel to the 1953 classic Peter Panhas a reassuringly old-fashioned feel, with computer-generated images and more-traditional artwork cleverly blended to recall the original. Wendy, now married with children, is living in a London ravaged by the blitz. Every night she enchants her small son with tales of pirates and Pan to distract him from the bombings but her serious young daughter Jane finds the stories of magic and fairies unconvincing in the face of a war-torn reality. After a fairly slow beginning establishing the bleak backdrop and the various characters--Jane's smug conscientiousness grates at times--the scene is set for the adventure to begin; and once the nefarious Hook and crew loom into sight, things really take off--literally.

In Never Land nothing much has changed: the dastardly Captain Hook, now tormented by a clicking octopus rather than a ticking crocodile, just wants to be hated; his crew remain bloodthirsty but bumbling; and feisty fairy Tinker Bell shimmers around in a jealous strop when another female appears on the scene. Unfortunately, the story line hasn't changed much either, being a thin re-working of the original, although there is an interesting mirroring between mother and daughter--one who was afraid to grow-up and the other distrustful of childhood, with its emphasis on fun and lack of responsibility.

It was never going to be easy to follow the original Peter Panbut Return to Never Landis an engaging sequel and the uplifting "So To Be One of Us" is Disney music at its best. (Ages 3 to 9)--Helen Baker
