Summary: A woman who murdered her abusive husband during an alcoholic blackout is finally released from prison. Attempting to make a new start she finds the temptation to begin drinking again difficult to contend with. Also she begins to ask herself whether she really did murder her husband.

Lizzie Hunt has just been released from prison on parole after being convicted of murdering her husband in a alcoholic haze. She returns to her home town to find that the local people are not willing to forgive her for what happened all those years ago. Only an ex-boyfriend is willing to give her a second chance. Lizzie finds that the pressure on her from the local people and her estranged son forces her to contemplate drinking again but her determination not to sink back into her bad old ways force her to confront her feelings and she starts to have flashbacks about the fateful night of the murder and she begins to doubt whether she murdered her husband at all.

Editor's Review

amazon.co.uk Peter Sellers's third go-around as the prideful but bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau is funny enough, but this 1975 Blake Edwards revival of the Sellers-Clouseau connection is a little weak in comparison to predecessors The Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark (both made in 1964). Costar Christopher Plummer actually gets some of the most interesting screen time as a retired cat burglar whom Clouseau accuses of getting back into the business. (If it sounds like there might be a To Catch a Thief vibe mixed in here, you're right.) Herbert Lom is hilarious as Clouseau's psychologically eroding boss, and Clouseau's ritualistic collisions with valet Cato (Burt Kwouk) are great examples of Edwards's delicious comic timing. --Tom Keogh
