Summary: Set in England in 1699, Thomas Smithers is determined to impress his wife by transforming the landscape around his country home. Unfortunately Juliana has little time for either her husband or the local scenery...

The young Dutch artist Meneer Chrome (Ewan McGregor) has been summoned to a secluded country estate where the wealthy Thomas Smithers (Pete Postlethwaite) has commissioned an extravagant garden to be created. The instructions for its creation come from the evil Fitzmaurice (Richard E. Grant), whose true aim is to destroy Smithers financially with the garden, and steal away his beautiful wife, Juliana (Greta Scacchi). Juliana has different ideas, however, as she herself lusts after the young architect. To make matters more complicated, Chrome begins to fall in love with Thomas and Juliana's disturbed yet beautiful daughter, Thea (Carmen Chaplin).

Editor's Review

amazon.co.uk The Serpent's Kisswill probably be well received by fans of Peter Greenaway's arch and ornate films (The Draughtsman's Contract, Drowning By Numbersfor example). In this movie, a young Dutch landscape artist named Chrome (Ewan MacGregor) is hired by homely but rich landowner Smithers (Pete Postlethwaite) to turn his overgrown estate into a masterpiece of topiary and hedge-mazes. But unbeknown to Smithers, Chrome is fulfilling the will of Smithers' ardent enemy (Richard E Grant), who hopes to bankrupt the wealthy man and seduce his beautiful wife (Greta Scacchi). When Chrome falls under the spell of Smithers' enigmatic daughter, all plans go awry. The strong cast wallows entertainingly in this mix of jealousy, decadence, intriguing visuals, Machiavellian schemes, and heaving bosoms, with Grant performing with his usual lurid gusto. The sumptuous Restoration-era costumes enhance this meditation on art versus nature. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com
