When the boys are implicated in a petty crime, they are punished by society, resulting in tragic consequences. The Italian neorealist film was filmed on location in post-war Rome and features non-professional actors. It was inspired by the real stories of people caught up in the chaos of a world plagued by poverty and unemployment. The film received an Honorary Award at the 1948 Oscars, the first foreign film to receive an Oscar.
