The Six Theatres of WWII consists of two DVD sets, each of which contain two individual DVD discs focused on the military campaigns of the Second World War. In turn, these sets are part of a wider range of double packages, coming under the overall title of Chronicles of War. Each set offers three documentary films with a total running time of just under three hours. The films contain rare and recently discovered archive film and are packed with vivid combat footage, providing a strong companion series to the television classic The World At War. The material is almost entirely black and white, and the picture quality, which is dependent on the source materials, is as good as can be expected.

Volume 1: "The Lightning Campaign" is the story of a method of warfare, the Blitzkrieg, and period of time, the first ten months of WWII, during which German forces invaded and overran seven countries. The film ranges from Poland in September 1939, to the fall of Paris in the summer of 1940. "The Air Campaign" dilutes its powerful visual impact by trying to pack too much in, seeking to cover every aspect of aerial warfare from the Battle of Britain to the atomic bombing of Japan. "The Desert Campaign" is exclusively focused on the war in North Africa and benefits considerably by this more focused approach. There are 12 extra features: three new shorts on "The Stormtrooper", "The Panzer" and "The Dive Bomber", and nine wartime propaganda films covering air combat and the desert campaign. The films average around four minutes each and are fascinating viewing, particularly one showing the desert war from the German point of view. --Gary S Dalkin
