Offering all ten Star Trek movies to date in one complete set, this particular collection is a terrific guided tour through the highs and lows of one of the world’s most enduring and important science fiction franchises. The highlights and lowlights are, as folklore correctly dictates, generally determined by whether the movie in question is odd or even numbered. Certainly adventures 1, 3, 5 and 7 are on the weaker side, although this reviewer does profess a soft spot for the ninth film in the series, Insurrection. But the even numbered entries in the series, with the possible exception of the last--Star Trek: Nemesis--have offered some terrific big screen science fiction over the past decades.
If there’s a highlight, then Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan is generally regarding as good as the best the cinematic franchise got, although the humour-laced Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is also great fun. The original cast bow out with the similarly strong Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, while the Next Generation crew had taken over come the terrific, action-packed Borg-fight in Star Trek: First Contact.
Certainly, the movies of Star Trek have seen their off days, but there’s enough sci-fi entertainment in this excellent set to easily warrant its asking price. --Jon Foster
