The Stereophonics' Live at Cardiff Castleis best summed up by one of the punters interviewed before the start of the show: "They're just a real band, aren't they. There's no rubbish going on--no nice haircuts or leather trousers. They're a properband." More than that, they come across as indie's answer to the classic power trio--assuming anyone remembers the question--belting out an amazing set to a 10,000 strong audience in the gorgeous grounds of Cardiff Castle on a glorious summer's day in 1998. Fans will find all their favourites here, and the perfectly captured atmosphere is effectively the band's fourth member.
On the DVD:Live at Cardiffon disc contains no sign of the "open and humorous interview" which, according to the back cover blurb, is supposed to be intercut with the concert footage. There is, however, a moment or two of pre-concert chat with various smug management and record company types who provide their smarmy appraisal of the band that pays their salaries. Just ignore them and enjoy the gig, which, in fact, is all there is on this 4:3 DVD anyway. There are no special features at all.--Roger Thomas
