Summary: An incompetent lawyer must defend a man accused of murdering his wife. Despite the man's insistence that he really is guilty, the lawyer sees the case as his big break.
Peter Sellers and Richard Attenborough play multiple characters in this satirical comedy, based on John Mortimer's play. Fowle (Attenborough) has murdered his wife Doris because her constant laughing finally drove him to distraction. He is put on trial and defended by over-the-hill attorney Morgenhall (Sellers), who makes a terrible case for his client. Although Fowle admits his guilt, his lawyer insists on pleading innocent so he can give the courtroom performance of a lifetime. John Mortimer adapted the script from his own comic play, "The Dock Brief."
