A cult classic of the Italian police genre, VIOLENT PROFESSIONALS stars Luc Merenda as an uncompromising detective who pursues criminals with a vengeance bordering on sadism. When the police commissioner is gunned down in broad daylight on the streets of Milan, Merenda dives into the sleazy Italian underworld in an attempt to find the killer responsible for his former companion's death. What he discovers is a large terrorist network intent on destroying the Italian government by robbing banks and murdering random people. True to its title, VIOLENT PROFESSIONALS features car chases, bloody shootings, and senseless violence galore, but the film also has a refreshing self-awareness that makes it clear director Sergio Martino wanted to enliven the proceedings with a slight tongue-in-cheek attitude.
